We are continuing to look for new volunteers and, as always, we welcome your donation.
Right now the board is focusing on building a solid base of operating costs prior to hiring an executive director again.
Your donation will go directly to work here in Central Oregon to aid our push towards equality.
A Social Justice committee has started meeting monthly to talk about campaigns such as Marriage Equality, Transgender Justice, HIV/AIDs, immigrant rights, ally building, leadership development and anti oppression trainings among other topics. We welcome any newcomers to the committee who are passionate about working with our allies to help create a more just and welcoming community for all who live here. Our social justice work has been elevated by a great move we made this past year from our old office space to the new Social Justice Center at 155 NW Irving.
The center is a collaborative effort between non-profits, unions, and the private sector to help advance the cause of justice for everyone. This alliance of organizations has given all of our missions more strength and a larger group of allies to work with. We welcome you to stop by and see our new office space, while we don't yet have regular posted hours our office is now staffed by board members and volunteers Monday through Friday. To ensure that someone is there when you come by give us a call.
A Pride committee was formed to plan our 2013 Pride celebration. A huge thanks to all of those volunteers who have assisted with this endeavor, especially Rise Up International for bringing together our entertainment and beer garden. And a huge thank you to our sponsors Bend Radio Group, PQ monthly, the Source Weekly, Bend Pet Express, Cascade A&E, Absolut, Pride Foundation, Blue Sky Renewable Energy, Pacific Power, Castaño Photo and Design, Equity Foundations John Paul Designs and Stars and Rainbows.
Following Pride we will continue to host fun social events like out monthly LGBTQ nights at Club Seven and our 11th annual Drag show coming up October 12.
Our youth program has seen some fantastic achievements this year. Our youth interns last fall applied for and received a grant for our Queer Youth Space (QYS) to put on a Queer Prom that was absolutely outstanding. There was music, dancing, snacks, crafting, a photo booth, a costume contest with prizes, fire dancers and an educational aspect designed to help empower the young people in attendance. We had a great turn out and it was definitely a night to remember.
QYS meets Wednesdays at Wabi Sabi from 5-6:30, it is for youth ages 14-20 that are LGBTQ or questioning and allies and will continue to meet through out the summer. This summer we also plan to offer leadership and anti-oppression trainings to QYS and GSA students from the college and high schools to help develop strong group of young people in our community ready to continue fighting for human rights and social justice for many years to come.
Human Dignity Coalition envisions a more compassionate Central Oregon community that embraces each of its members as valuable and cherished human beings.
